Brentwood Restaurants Don't Skimp on Southern Cuisine

Southern restaurants are everywhere you look in Brentwood and Cool Springs‚ so finding a delicious meal is as easy as … well‚ pie.

Speaking of pie‚ it’s the perfect ending to a meal at Puffy Muffin Bakery & Restaurant – whether it’s Boston Cream‚ Heavenly Chocolate or pecan.
Located in the H.G. Hills Shopping Center on Franklin Road‚ Puffy Muffin is known for its made-from-scratch comfort foods like Crunchy Chicken Casserole and Tortilla Soup as well as a long list of desserts and baked goods that have made it a local legend.

In addition to pies‚ Puffy Muffin serves up melt-in-your-mouth cinnamon rolls‚ fresh-baked sweet breads and cookies‚ and a variety of cakes‚ ranging from Three Layer Sour Cream Coconut to Apricot Nectar and Amaretto Chocolate. The restaurant has a smaller satellite location in Cool Springs.

Mouthwatering chicken crepes get rave reviews at the Front Porch Cafe in Maryland Farms. And the Monté Cristo sandwich – turkey, ham, chicken and bacon topped with Swiss and American cheese and grilled between thick slices of Texas toast and dusted with powdered sugar – is also a favorite.

Mere Bulles‚ French for “mother bubbles‚” is another local favorite. Housed in a stately 1942 mansion on Maryland Way‚ Mere Bulles is named for the grandmother of its founder‚ Rodney Wise‚ who was known for her buoyant spirit and love of champagne.

“If you aren’t from here‚ dining at Mere Bulles is a touch of the old South‚” says Tammy Kornberg‚ manager at Mere Bulles. “It’s fine dining that’s also comfortable. We want people to feel at home here.”

The menu is made up of American fare with a French twist.

“The Shrimp & Grits is really good‚ and we’re famous for our Charleston She Crab Bisque and our carrot cake‚” Kornberg says.

Sperry’s Restaurant in the heart of Cool Springs is another hot spot for fine dining. The newly opened Cool Springs location is an offshoot of the original Sperry’s Restaurant‚ which has been operating in Nashville since 1974.

Tastefully decorated with an English theme‚ Sperry’s specialties include Jumbo Lobster Tails‚ Alaskan King Crab Legs and Prince William’s Bleu Cheese Stuffed Filet‚ a bacon-wrapped filet stuffed with a garlic-seasoned mixture of butter and Maytag blue cheese.

Phillip’s Delicatessen on Harpeth Drive is another Brentwood eatery that serves breakfast and lunch.

Now in its 14th year of business‚ the deli prides itself on its friendly service and having the most delicious meats on the market.

“We use Thumann’s meat‚ which is a family business out of New Jersey‚” says Phillip Vaughan‚ owner of Phillip’s Delicatessen. “We bake our breads and bagels fresh every day‚ make our pasta and potato salads from scratch‚ cut up our own fruits and vegetables‚ and bake our own cookies. I tell all our workers‚ ‘Every time you make something‚ taste it. If it doesn’t taste right to you‚ it won’t taste right to the customer.’ ”

Phillip’s best-selling sandwich is the Turkey Breast Deluxe‚ and for early risers‚ the deli offers breakfast burritos and bagel sandwiches.
